ADVANTAGES OF TRUEGREEN PRODUCTS ‘TRUEGREEN’ products are made from BIOLICE using a process unique in the compostable materials market, from whole cereal grains. The products innovation lies in the combination of cereal functions with a compostable polymer. Maize is the most widely cultivated grain in the world, ahead of both wheat and rice. Maize is a plant that combines immense possibilities. Its formidable ability to capture CO2 emissions makes it an important ally in the fight against global warming. Particularly efficient in photosynthesis, maize also has the extraordinary ability to capture the sun’s rays and transform them into biomass, providing it has enough water to grow. It uses water parsimoniously 40 % more efficient than wheat. One hectare of maize absorbs 20 to 30 tons of carbon and supplies two to four times more oxygen than one hectare of forest. The products are made from maize / corn grown in the volcanic soil of the region of French Limagains. The corn that grew from this soil was basically non edible. Instead of leaving the land barren, the farmers decided to grow the corn. Thus the soil gets replenished and maximum utilization of otherwise unavailable land from agriculture was achieved. This also helped in providing extended green cover. TRUEGREEN products have distinct advantages over other alternatives i.e. conventional plastics and paper products. The advantages are: 100% Biodegradability and Compostabiity is one of the primary advantages of Truegreen Products as the main source is plants. It is tested for compostability as per EN, ASTM and IS/ISO norms including test for seed germination. It helps to regain soil content and complete the Nitrogen cycle. Since it has cereal grains and not starch as its main constituent, TRUEGREEN products appear to be very soft but still retaining all the important characteristics of conventional plastic. The Carbon Cycle – When a plant grows, it takes in carbon dioxide, and when it biodegrades, it release carbon dioxide back into the earth – It’s a closed loop cycle. When we extract fossil fuel from the earth, we disrupt the natural cycle, and release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere faster than natural processes can take it away. As a result, the atmosphere is getting overloaded with carbon dioxide. Additionally, fossil fuels take millions of years to form, and are therefore non-renewable resources. In other words, we are using our fossil resources faster than they can be replaced. When we make products like plastics from fossil fuels, we are contributing to the imbalance in the environment while depleting valuable fossil resources, thereby increasing the carbon footprint of the product. The overall cost of Truegreen products though appears high to conventional plastics, but right from planting the corn to manufacturing compost is far lower than the overall cost involved in normal plastics. Production cost, consumption cost, disposal and litter cost. This is because disposal and litter cost in TRUEGREEN products is ideally nil since being biocompostable. An alternative to TRUEGREEN – Paper Products Paper products have gained popularity simply because of its environment friendly properties. But in reality, paper and plastics products are almost hand to hand in causing pollution. For an instance, paper products generate 70% more air and 50 times more water pollutants than ever plastic products. A few issues regarding paper products are: Energy and Natural Resources – To produce a paper bag requires as much as four times energy than to produce a compostable bag. About 14 million trees are required to be cut to produce 10 billion grocery bags. Pollution – As mentioned earlier, paper products produces more pollutants than TRUEGREEN products. The Kraft paper is made by heating wood chips under pressure at high temperature in a chemical solution. The gases generated from the production contribute to several types of pollution, acid rain, water pollution etc. Further toxicity is also produced by the paper products itself when it degenerates. Recycling More than 90 % energy is saved from recycling of TRUEGREEN products as compared to recycling of paper although the amount of rates for either one of their disposable products is very less. Degradability – Paper takes up more space than TRUEGREEN material in a landfill or when it is transported – almost 7 times the space. Further the paper does not degrade at a significant higher rate. What are Oxo-degradable Products? Oxo-degradable are fragmentable material , mainly referred to as oxo-biodegradable , made up of polyethylene, chemically a very stable synthetic polymer and combined with starch and oxidizing agents that enable it to fragments in UV rays and high temperature . These materials are not compostable. They are not really “renewable” because large amounts of fossil-fuels are burned and CO2 emitted in the production process. Non Woven Bags In order to assess the composition of these kinds of bags, testing was conducted at Shriram Institute of Industrial Research, New Delhi, which has clearly indicated that the composition of such non-woven bags contained Polypropylene to the tune of 98.3% which is again a non-biodegradable material. As per the New Lexicon Webster”s Dictionary of English Language, “polypropylene” means:- “a thermoplastic resin that is a moisture-resistant, hard, tough plastic used to make molded objects in plates, fibres, film, rope and toys”. The Delhi Plastic Bag (Manufacture, Sales and Usage) and Non-biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act, 2000 (hereinafter referred to as „the Delhi Plastic Bag Act‟). Section 2(h) of the said Delhi Plastic Bag Act defines “non-biodegradable garbage” to mean waste, garbage or material, which is not bio-degradable garbage and includes “plastic material”, such as polyethylene, nylon, PVC, polypropylene, pet etc., which are not capable of being easily destroyed by the action of living organisms, light, heat, moisture, radiations, oxidations or combination of all these factors and which are more specifically included in the Schedule of the said Act. The Schedule to the said Act lists items which fall under the category of “non-biodegradable garbage”. Polypropylene is indicated at S.No.4. It was, therefore, contended that polypropylene was non-biodegradable and was a plastic material. Thus, non-woven bags, which contain 98.3% polypropylene, would clearly be covered within the ambit of the expression “plastic bags” and, more particularly, “non-biodegradable plastic bags”. Polypropylene film is used for making plastic bags as they are normally understood. Whether it is polypropylene fibre or it is polypropylene film, the end product made out of it would remain to be plastic, provided the end product predominantly contains polypropylene, whether fibre or film. In the present case, the admitted position is that the non-woven bags comprise of 98.3% polypropylene. Therefore, the conclusion is simple that the end product is nothing but plastic.
